Meaning 'cotton castle,' Pamukkale is one of Turkey's most spectacular sights — dazzling white travertine terraces formed over millennia by thermal water. Right beside them lie the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis, letting you enjoy nature and history at once.
Enjoying the travertine terraces
The terraces are cascading white pools coating the hillside. To protect them, parts are walked barefoot, letting you wade through warm mineral water. The pools shimmer blue in the sun and are especially beautiful in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon.
Hierapolis and Cleopatra's Pool
Above the terraces sprawl the ruins of Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC. The well-preserved theater and necropolis are impressive. At 'Cleopatra's Pool,' where ancient columns lie submerged, you can even bathe in the thermal water (extra fee).
Best season and how long to allow
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), with their mild weather, are ideal. Summer sun is strong so bring a hat and sun protection; in winter the terrace water stays warm. Allow a half to full day to see both the terraces and Hierapolis at a relaxed pace.
Getting there from Istanbul
Pamukkale is inland, so from Istanbul the usual route is a domestic flight plus local transfer. A day trip is possible, but a two-day loop combining nearby Ephesus lets you enjoy it without rushing. A tour that includes transfers, the domestic flight and lunch takes the logistics off your hands.
